At the time of this photo, the library microforms (both microfilm and microfiche) were housed in the reference area on the alumni side of the third floor. In this photo are machines to read both fiche and film, and some of the cabinets holding the microforms. They were later moved to the 4th, the 2nd, and now the 1st floor of the library.

Before libraries used computer programs and electronic catalogs, they depended on the card catalog. In each drawer of the catalog was a group of index cards with call number, title, author, and several bits of cataloging information about the book represented by the card. Patrons would look up a book in the catalog to find the call number so they could go to the book stacks to obtain the book.
