Inside this box is a pitch pipe that was used to help tune a banjo. The pitch pipe has four tubes tuned to the notes C,G,D, and A and by blowing on one of these tubes, a player could tune a corresponding string on the banjo to know how to tune it. This photo shows the back view of the box. The banjo this was with was made by the William Lange banjo company sometime between 1925 and 1939.
