Taylor Steven Boyd, seen here at age 14, lifts a 1,660 pound weight while his father, Clarence E. Boyd watches in this photograph from 1953. This photograph was taken in the Boyd's backyard at 812 4th Street NE in Pulaski. The weight was made by filling a barrel with cement and rebar and then hanging weights off of the rebar. Paul Anderson (considered the world's strongest man at the time) was a friend of the Boyd family and he inspired Taylor to do this. Weights from the family's basement gym were used. Taylor Boyd loved to lift weights and did so his whole life. Taylor Boyd died July 14, 2011 at age 72. The smokestacks in the background are from the old acid plant in town. From studio portraiture to candid shots around Pulaski County, Virginia, the Farmer photograph Collection shows the people and daily life in and around Pulaski County, Virginia in the 1945-1995 timeframe.
