In the valley of the Pegnitz, Where across blue meadow lands Rise the blue Franciscan Mountains, Nuremberg, the ancient, stands. * * * Everywhere I see around me Rise the wondrous world of Art; Monuments wrought with richest sculpture Standing in the common mart. From Longfellow's "Nuremberg" Of all the old cities of Germany, Nuremberg is the quaintest. The city lies on both sides of the little Pegnitz River, in nearly equal parts. A part of it is still encircled by a towered wall. Perhaps one of the chief attractions of the city is here shown. This is the Nuremberg market on market day. The market is held on the principal square of the city opposite the Church of Our Lady. In the little booths are offered for sale the many products of the surrounding country, ranging from cheese to flowers. The statue on the left is the Neptune Fountain. The original of this stands in Petrograd (py´ tr-grät´). Back of the church is another fountain called The Little Goose Man. This statue shows a peasant carrying to market a goose under each arm. The Church of Our Lady was erected in the middle of the 14th century. Its most interesting feature is the old clock. At noon, 7 figures, representing German electors, come out and march around a small statue of Emperor Charles IV. Nuremberg is a city of almost 300,000 people. It is the center of the German toy manufacture, and is also noted for its lead pencils, and its gingerbread. Here, too, were invented watches, first called, "Nuremberg eggs". The city claims also the invention of brass wire-drawing and gunlocks. "Made in Germany"-how used? Why?
