In Westmoreland and Cumberland Counties is the Lake District of England. You can locate it on the map by finding the cities of Lancaster and Carlisle in northwestern England. Between these two cities the Lake District lies. The Lake District is noted because of the authors who have lived there and who have written about it. William Wordsworth, his sister Dorothy, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Hartley Coleridge, John Ruskin, William Southey-these are some of the famous people of the District. But even if one did not like poetry the scenery of the section is enough to satisfy a traveler. Here are mountains, lakes, waterfalls, woods and English country. Hundreds of tourists every year visit Grasmere. Ambleside, Keswick, Windmere, and the other villages of the District. Lake Grasmere here shown is a beautiful sheet of water a mile long and a half mile wide. The village of Grasmere, which you can see of the farther side of the lake, is noted as the burial place of Wordsworth. Here back of the quaint old church the great poet is buried. Near the church is Dove Cottage where he lived for 9 years. All the country about has been described in his poetry. He and his sister and Coleridge tramped over the hills and knew every foot of the ground. Many times does "Grasmere's happy vale" appear in Wordsworth's poetry. Here is a bit you will enjoy: A narrow girdle of rough stones and crags, A rude and natural causeway, interposed Between the water and the winding slope Of copse and thicket, leaves the eastern shore Of Grasmere safe in its own privacy. What have you read that Wordsworth wrote? Ruskin? Coleridge? Who is the author of each of the following: "We Are Seven," "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "Daffodils"?
