Moslems (mz´lm) are the followers of Mohammed (m-hm´d). Mohammed claimed to be a prophet sent from God to carry the Word to the Faithful. Their sacred book is the Koran (k-rän´). There are in the world today over 200,000,000 Mohammedans. During the Middle Ages the city of Delhi was the center of Moslem power. The Mohammedans then ruled over a large part of India, and Delhi was their capital. In the seventeenth century the mosque (msk) which you see here was built. It is the finest cathedral mosque in all India. Here five times each day the Faithful are called to prayers. A muezzin (m-z´n), or priest, from one of the towers calls at dawn, at noon, about 4 P. M., at sunset, and after dark. This is what he says: "God is great! (three times). There is not God but Allah (twice). Mohammed is the prophet of God (twice). Come ye to prayer. God is great (twice). There is no God but Allah." In this view you see the crowds leaving the mosque following prayer. Study the faces. Observe the queer dress the people wear. Delhi is an interesting city with an interesting history. Since 1912 it has been the capital of the Indian Empire. It is the size of Indianapolis, Ind., and is a railroad center. It has 7 railways. It has shoe factories, cotton cloth factories, iron foundries, and flour mills. There is a high wall around the city, nearly 6 miles in length. We would know by this that it is an old, old city. There was a Delhi a thousand years before the discovery of America. This much is known, and there may have been a Delhi a thousand years before that.
