Description
This letter to the McConnell family in Radford from Rio in Oneota, New York seems to be updating them on her plans to return to Virginia in the coming months because she and her husband, Carl McConnell can not afford for her to stay with Carl for the summer. Carl McConnell was at the time teaching at a Hartwick College in Oneota, New York and had no guaranteed income for the summer. Rio mentions that they had run out of coal to burn and that they were both suffering from the climate in New York, also that they were in debt and that she felt the need to find a job to help with expenses. Rio McConnell was a certified teacher in the state of Virginia at the time. In previous letters she had mentioned the thought that she and Carl should rent an apartment instead of having a house to save on expenses and in his reply to that letter dated May 21, 1934, John Preston McConnell had urged them to rethink that and keep a house. This letter is a continuation of her thoughts on that matter.
