- John Preston McConnell frequently called on his friends and colleagues to assist in finding work for his sons Carl and Paul by exerting any influence they may have at various institutions. In this letter, he is alerting Carl that Senator Harry Byrd and Secretary of the Navy- Claude Swanson have both been contacted and requested to help. He also indicates if needed, he can also contact Congressman Woodrum to add additional influence to help Carl McConnell secure a job at an unnamed institution.
