- In this short letter to Rio, John Preston McConnell mentions that he assumes Carl is "just about to reach Portugal by now". In an unscanned note, he also mentions to Carl that he received a $1 check from Washington to cover the cost of Carl'l passport for his trip to Portugal but it is unclear why he was there.
