Description
vol. 1, no. 1.
The inaugural issue of The New River Free Press, published in February 1983, documents news and announcements for various organizations in the New River Valley, focusing on Montgomery county. Topics documented in this issue include nuclear energy, abortion, peace movement, environmentalism, local issues, and reader submitted poetry. February 1983 (Volume 1, Issue 1) Statement of Purpose: “The New River Free Press is a service by and for the people of the New River Valley. The fast pace of change in our world and the many complex problems we face demand that news should be issue-oriented, future-oriented, and preserved from a humanistic viewpoint. We will strive for objectivity, but our values and commitments cannot be denied, so we will be open about them. The NRFP will hold as its first priority the promotion of world peace and universal social justice, and will report on issues relevant to these goals. We invite everyone to submit articles or letters to the paper, provided that they respond to this commitment. We will try to clarify the connections between local problems and global issues. Our commitment further requires that we serve as a forum for dissent, a stimulus for alternative modes of living, and a catalyst for public debate. It would be unrealistic to think that the NRFP could relate the concerns and perspectives of even the majority of people in this area. We will focus on the activities of the many “progressive” groups in the area, and on ideas about the paths that humanity must seek (and, on the other hand, get off of) to reach peace, justice, and harmony with the earth. We believe that the NRFP will provide a valuable service to everyone in the New River Valley by presenting these perspectives for your consideration, debate, or involvement. The NRFP is a non-profit service to the people of this area. All labor is voluntary. Please consider submitting an article or a suggestion for an article, donating your time (typing, layout, distribution, selling ads), or contributing financially. Let us know your thoughts about this paper. In sum, the NRFP will support the creation of societies where age groups, races, sexes, classes, people with any deformity or deficiency, and with any and all views of the world and our place in it shall interact without prejudice or other barriers; where humanity lives in harmony with all species and with the earth in our consumption patterns, cultivation, waste disposal, and use of technology; where cooperation guides our international negotiations; and where the creative potentials of all people are given freedom and encouragement.”
