Princess Street is the pride of Edinburgh. It is one of the beautiful streets in the world. It is fitting that this finest street in Scotland should contain Scott's monument. The spire you see is built in his honor. A statue of the great writer stands in the open way the monument covers. Scott, as you know, is not buried here, but Edinburgh was Scott's home for many years. The beautiful Waverley Gardens, a park of flowers, you see to the left of Princess Street. What are they named after? About the Gardens are the chief buildings of Edinburgh. The Waverley Railway Station, the Royal Institution, and the National Gallery are all close at hand. The Waverley Railway Station is the largest in the United Kingdom. It covers 23 acres of ground. Edinburgh was founded about 617 by a king of Northumbria, named Edwin. It is still Edwin's burgh. The town began about the old castle, which overlooks all of the city. The Scotch called this town Dunedin, that is, the hill of Edwin. It became the capital of Scotland in 1437. Edinburgh is now divided into two parts, the Old Town and the New Town. The Old Town is centered about High Street, with the Castle at one end and Holyrood Palace at the other. The New Town centers about Princess Street. Locate Edinburgh. On what river is it? What city of Scotland is larger? How does Edinburgh as shown here compare with cities you know? Edinburgh is a city of 320,000 inhabitants. That is, it is about the size of Los Angeles, Cal., or Washington, D. C. It is famous as an educational center. Edinburgh University is one of the leading schools of the world. Edinburgh is also a great city for the publication of books and the making of maps.
