Description
Human and animal power were still quite important in moving goods throughout the city. This load is being moved by Hazaras. Hazaras were a recent influx to the city of Kabul from the Hazarajat region in the center of the country. Hazaras generally worked in the lower class menial jobs and were to a degree looked down by other Afghans because the Hazaras, although Persian/Dari speakers were Mongolian looking and members of the Shia sect of Islam unlike the rest of the Afghan population who were about 80 % Sunni. The Blair Brainard Peace Corps in Afghanistan Photographic Collection captures the photographers experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan, primarily in the city of Herat, 1965-1968.
