The Gypsies of Claytor Lake
In this project, Greg Allen interviewed his aunts Nancy Dunford and Dawn Morehead, and his cousin Steve Jenkins, all of the Claytor Lake area of Pulaski County Virginia. All had grown up and lived in the Claytor Lake area and Mr. Allen remembered times both before and after “The Gypsies” started coming to and staying at Claytor Lake. The purpose of these interviews was to learn more about the Gypsies and to try to separate family legend from actual facts. When it Rains it Pours. Flood of 1985
This project, by Janee’ Claytor was inspired by Ms. Claytor wondering what happened to Lakeside, a popular amusement park in Roanoke, Virginia. After speaking with various people about this, she heard repeatedly about the flood of 1985 and those conversations inspired this project. To learn more about the flood, interviews were conducted with Dixie Bratton, Bertha Williams, and Dianne Gunter. She learned of business’ being destroyed, people dying, and devastating damage to homes and buildings, and how survivors of the flood coped. In this project, Mike Vance interviews fellow Radford University student Justin Horton. In the interview, Mr. Horton tells four ghost stories and Mr. Vance compares those to traditional Appalachian ghost stories and points out the common themes. In this project, Jacqueline Kelly interviewed her father, Jim Kelly about his a general merchandise store that his parents ran in Ben Hur, Virginia. Mr. Kelly lived in the store while growing up and told stories about that, and about how a small store can create a feeling of community in a small town. Memories of Healing: Home Remedies
In this project, Kristin Ratliff interviewed her grandmother Ann Alderman, her grandfather Hubert Ratliff and his wife Barbara, and family friend Stella Sowers, with the intention of gathering folk remedies for common ailments, and to learn more about these remedies. All were from southwest Virginia, and all had similar stories and remedies to share.
