In this project, Nathan Webb interviewed his grandfather, Sterling Robinson. Mr. Robinson grew up and worked the farm that his father also grew up on and worked and had a very deep knowledge about how to farm in the Appalachian mountains. In addition to being a farmer, Mr. Robinson had also been an agriculture teacher during his lifetime. In this project, Katherine LaRosa interviewed Pauline Long of Radford, Virginia. In the interview, Ms. Long spoke of growing up and working on the Bowles Farm, which has since been renamed Selu Conservancy. Ms. Long spoke of living and working on a farm in the 1930-40s in the Appalachian region, tending livestock, tending vegetables, canning, selling farm products and more. In this project Milena Glumsic interviewed her grandmother, Evelyn Rose Glumsic of Edgewater, Maryland. Thess interviews were held over the telephone, and during them Ms. Glumsic spoke about using home remdies to heal people, gave particulars as to how to make various home remedies, spoke of canning fruits and vegetables, and differing methods of preserving meats. In this project Jillian Knauf interviewed Kermit and Frances Grim, of Floyd County Virginia. The Grims live on a farm and raised two sons there. On this farm, they have raised dairy cattle, beef cattle, various fruits and vegetables and generally have lived off the land. Making Do With What You Have: Growing up in the 1930's
In this project, Shilah Hackler interviewed her grandmother, Margaret Hackler about her experiences cooking. During the interview it was learned that Ms. Hackler did not necessarily enjoy cooking, but did it because it was necessary. She discussed various ways that cooking and ideas about cooking had changed over the years and how she would grow what she needed to live on because she didn’t often get to go to a store to buy things. These interviews are interesting because they provide a different perspective from many depression stories we have heard. In this project, Diane Brinkley interviewed Ray Dickerson to learn more about how people preserved farm-raised foods during the Great Depression. Mr. Dickerson grew up on land that is now the Selu Conservancy in Radford, Virginia. Topics discussed include various types of canning, using salt, and carefully selecting where you stored preserved foods in the house.

In this project, Amy Phillips interviewed her grandfather, Winston “Buddy” Phillips, her aunt, Cheryl Vile, and family friend Flossy McCoy about traditional apple butter and how to make it. Ms. Phillips had been exposed to the making of apple butter throughout her life but had never paid much attention to the actual process. During these three interviews, she learned about the tradition of it, the process of it, and heard additional stories about canning, hunting, butchering animals and other aspects of Appalachian life. In this project, Amy Phillips interviewed her grandfather, Winston “Buddy” Phillips, her aunt, Cheryl Vile, and family friend Flossy McCoy about traditional apple butter and how to make it. Ms. Phillips had been exposed to the making of apple butter throughout her life but had never paid much attention to the actual process. During these three interviews, she learned about the tradition of it, the process of it, and heard additional stories about canning, hunting, butchering animals and other aspects of Appalachian life. This interview is among projects created by students enrolled in English 446 (initially English 452), “Appalachian Folklore,” 1981-2019, and in graduate level counterparts English 548 and 648 “Appalachian Folk Culture(s)” offered 17 fall semesters between 1987 and 2009. Minimally contain collector’s introduction and analysis, transcribed informant interviews, and excerpted and labeled examples of oral, customary, and/or material folklore/folklife collected primarily within the Appalachian region. Most include also tables of contents, informant information, indexes (outlines) of interviews, photographs, miscellaneous paper items, and indexes of informants, genres, and geographic locations. Cooking Up A Storm: A Story of Cooking, Gathering, and Natural Healing in Appalachia
Angie Spence enjoys cooking and knows from her experiences growing up in the Eastern Shore of Virginia, that people cook with what foods are native to their regions. This idea interested her and gave inspiration for this project. Ms. Spence found three local fans of cooking and interviewed, and cooked with them. During the interviews, she heard about gathering roots and berries, canning, making preserves, and natural healing using traditional Appalachian herbal elixirs. In addition, Ms. Spence saw that with a love of cooking comes also a love of family and friends.
