1975 Women & Art Panel Discussion Moderated by Dorothy Gillespie. May 13, 1975 Part 1
May 5-15, 1975 New York University's Loeb Student Center's art committee joined with the Fine Arts Museum of the Women's Interart Center in presenting a series of special events to salute 1975 Women and Art. Alice Neel (1900-1984) was an American visual artist known for portrait work which generally featured women as seen from a female perspective. Cindy Nemser (1937-2021) was an American art historian and writer and was the founder and editor of the Feminist Art Journal. Maggie Tripp (1921-2014) was a feminist and activist known as "the respected mouthpiece of the women's movement". Lawrence Alloway (1926-1990)was an English art critic and curator known for coining the terms "Pop Art" and "Mass Popular Art". Ruth Van Doren is an artist who works in painting, photography, glass blowing, papermaking, book arts, and jewelry. Dorothy Gillespie (1920-2012) was an American artist known for large, colorful, abstract sculptures and was artist in residence at the Women's Interart Center in NY. In this recording, a panel discussion among the group was moderated by Ms. Gillsepie at a Women's Interart Center event.- Creator

This recording is a panel discussion between four professional artists who participated in Women's Artvance....An Evening of Events in New York City, April 8, either 1973 or 1974. Participating in this discussion are Dorothy Gillespie, Muriel Castanis (1926-2006) an American sculptor, Ann Gillan, and Geraldine Krieger a painter. June Blum (1929-2017), a multimedia American artist who produced paintings, sculptures, prints, light shows, happenings, jewelry, art books, pottery, conceptual documentations, and drawings and was curator of the Suffolk Museum in Stoneybrook, Long Island, NY. Among other topics, they discussed the show Unmanly Art that Ms. Blum had arranged. This interview was conducted by Dorothy Gillespie and is in three parts.
