A Trip from Herat to Kabul via the Hazarijat. Brainard_3Q024
The Minaret of Jam stands 213 feet tall and is located in a narrow remote mountainous valley on the bank of the Herat River. it is the second highest minaret in the world. It was unknown by most of the workd until the late 1950's. Of course the local villagers in the area knew about it. The minaret was built during the Ghurid Dynasty (1148-1202). In Chaghcharān, we decided to give up our jeep and continue by bus/truck. Trucks like this were quite common in Afghanistan. It is an International Harvester truck frame with a bed built and decorated in Afghanistan. In addition, the driver was always supposed to honk whenever we passed under the phone line so the passengers could duck.<br>The Blair Brainard Peace Corps in Afghanistan Photographic Collection captures the photographers experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan, primarily in the city of Herat, 1965-1968.- Creator
