McConnell Library Card Catalog
McConnell Library Card Catalog
Before libraries used computer programs and electronic catalogs, they depended on the card catalog. In each drawer of the catalog was a group of index cards with call number, title, author, and several bits of cataloging information about the book represented by the card. Patrons would look up a book in the catalog to find the call number so they could go to the book stacks to obtain the book. -

Letter from Carl to his parents, John Preston and Clara McConnell. This letter is apparently in response to an earlier letter from his parents dated January 35, 1930. In this letter, Carl alerts his parents he has been appointed a National Research Fellow for Foreign Study. He will have his choice of studying in either the Baltic, or in Jugoslavia. The remainder of the letter talks about the award and with Carl recommending one of his friends at University of Virginia for a position opening at Radford. This letter is also the first time we see something that will be very common in later letters- Round Robin writing. The McConnell family circulated letters amongst themselves so that all family members would know the same things about each other, and often would write letters of their own on the back pages of these letters. In this letter Clara Lucus (referred to as Machere here and in other places) added her own letter to other family members- Mac, Charlton and June.- Creator
