McConnell Library Card Catalog
Before libraries used computer programs and electronic catalogs, they depended on the card catalog. In each drawer of the catalog was a group of index cards with call number, title, author, and several bits of cataloging information about the book represented by the card. Patrons would look up a book in the catalog to find the call number so they could go to the book stacks to obtain the book. -

The library has checked out projectors, screens, and other things needed to use audio-visual material. At the time of this photograph, the Audio-Visual items were checked out from a room on the 4th floor of McConnell Library. In addition to the items available for checkout, in this photograph we can also see the lamination machine that was available for use in the building. -

McConnell Library is built on a hill so the main entrance is on the third floor. This photo shows an unidentified student leaving the library Reading Room with a stack of books. The structure on the left works, in conjunction with a detection device put in each book, to detect theft of library material. -

When a person enters the main entrance and building lobby of McConnell Library they enter a large Reading Room. In this room is the circulation desk, popular journals and selected books. In this photo we see an unidentified student using a campus telephone that is also in this room. -

There was a time of transition between when libraries used a physical card catalog and when they used a computer based catalog. During this transition time it seems some items were cataloged in the card catalog and some on fiche. The microfiche catalog would later be used as a backup system when the new electronic catalog was first in use. -

The cataloging department of McConnell Library in 1985. This department was located on the third floor of the library, and has since been moved to the second floor. This department was responsible for creating records and call numbers for books, serials, videorecordings, sound recordings, and other types of information in the library. -

Next to the circulation desk on the third floor of McConnell Library was a circulation workroom. The machine in this photograph was in that room and was used to sensitize or de-sensitize a detection device installed in each book in the library collection. That device, in conjunction with a detection gate near the exit helped deter theft of library materials. -

At the time of this photo, the library microforms (both microfilm and microfiche) were housed in the reference area on the alumni side of the third floor. In this photo are machines to read both fiche and film, and some of the cabinets holding the microforms. They were later moved to the 4th, the 2nd, and now the 1st floor of the library. -

At the time of this photograph, there were two rooms on the 4th floor of McConnell Library devoted to listening to music. Recordings were kept in one room, along with record and tape players. Library patrons would request a recording be played and would then sit in the adjoining room with headphones on to hear it. -

The item in this photograph is for viewing 35mm slides. The slides would be in a round carousel that sits on top of the machine and are then viewed on the screen beneath it. At the time of this photo this equipment was on the 4th floor of McConnell Library.
