3K001 A trip from Herat to Chesht-i-Sharif
In the summer of 1967, I met Paul W. English, Professor of Geography at the University of Texas. He was in Herat for the summer visiting and learning about the city. Through him, I was introduced to Richard N. Frye, who was also visiting in Herat. At Paul English's suggestion, I traveled with Dr. Frye on a trip from Herat up the Hari Rud (Herat River) to the shrine at Chest-i-Sharif, about 90 miles east of Herat. I went because I was interested in any excuse to travel in Afghanistan. (At this time I was working in the Herat branch of the National Tourist Office.) I had no real idea who Dr Frye was until much later. All I knew at the time was that he and his son were great traveling companions and that Dr Frye was very learned about Afghanistan. This is a picture of a camel and her baby along side the road. All of the camels in the area of Herat were of the "one humped" dromedary variety. Alongside the road we also saw a number of caves in the mountain side. Dr Frye speculated about the purpose of the caves and wondered if they could have been Buddhist in origin but we didn't stop to explore. The Minaret of Jam stands 213 feet tall and is located in a narrow remote mountainous valley on the bank of the Herat River. it is the second highest minaret in the world. It was unknown by most of the workd until the late 1950's. Of course the local villagers in the area knew about it. The minaret was built during the Ghurid Dynasty (1148-1202). The purpose of the minaret is unclear. It is often assumed it marks the site of the Ghurid capitol of Firuzkoh but considering the size and remoteness of the valley where it is located, this seems unlikely
The Blair Brainard Peace Corps in Afghanistan Photographic Collection captures the photographers experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan, primarily in the city of Herat, 1965-1968.- Creator

Almost immediately after crossing the bridge and starting up the road/stream bed, we met a group of nomads coming down the road from the central highlands. and we had to pull over to let them pass. On this road camels had the right-of way, so we pulled over to the side of the road and watched them pass.
The Blair Brainard Peace Corps in Afghanistan Photographic Collection captures the photographers experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan, primarily in the city of Herat, 1965-1968.- Creator

M'Ledge Moffett
M'Ledge Moffett was born in 1892, the only child of William Ledgerwood Moffett and Mary Stoops Moffett. The name M'Ledge was formed from shortened versions of her parents names, Mary and Ledgerwood. She attended the newly-opened State Normal School in Harrisonburg, Virginia (now James Madison University), graduating in 1910 with a Full Degree in Household Arts. Harrisonburg was the first school to offer such a degree in Virginia and Moffett was one of the first two graduates. From Harrisonburg, Moffett went to Columbia University's Teachers College in New York City. While working towards her Bachelor of Science degree in 1913 from Columbia, M'Ledge spent her summers as a Household Arts instructor at a Summer Normal School in Covington, Virginia. Moffett arrived in Radford on September 11, 1913, as the youngest faculty member and the only member of the Household Arts Department, a month after the school's formal dedication in August, 1913, and only a few days before classes began. She apparently quickly proved her ability to handle herself under pressure because McConnell almost immediately put her in charge of the school's sole dormitory. In Moffett's History of the State Teachers College at Radford, Virginia, 1910-1930, McConnell wrote in the third person of Moffett that, "in the judgment of the president, she was the most suitable person for this trying position, this she filled with great satisfaction to all concerned. This was the beginning of her official duties in the college." Among her many accomplishments while at Radford, President John P. McConnell appointed Moffett as the new Dean of Women, a year before she received her Master of Arts degree. She was the first person to hold that post at any of the Virginia institutions of higher education. She held the Dean's post until her retirement in 1962. This photo shows Moffett graduating from the State Normal School in Harrisonburg, VA and is part of Laura Nolen's "An Illustrated History 1913-1976" of Radford College.- Creator

For the first several years after the college opened, Moffett taught all of the Household Arts courses (Elementary Sewing, Elementary Cooking and Household Management) which met five times a week. In 1918, the Department doubled in size with the hiring of Myrtle Burnette. Moffett was one of six founding members of the Virginia Home Economics Association and president of the organization during the years 1915-1916 and 1925-1926. During the summers of 1916 through 1920, Moffett took courses at Columbia University’s Teachers College and received a Masters degree in 1921. She received her doctorate from Columbia in 1929, writing her dissertation on "The social background and activities of teachers college students". The dissertation, later published as a book, was the first of many publications. In 1920, the Radford Normal School was reorganized and McConnell appointed Moffett as the new Dean of Women, a year before she received her Master of Arts degree. She was the first person to hold that post at any of the Virginia institutions of higher education. She held the Dean's post until her retirement in 1962. McConnell Library Card Catalog
McConnell Library Card Catalog
Before libraries used computer programs and electronic catalogs, they depended on the card catalog. In each drawer of the catalog was a group of index cards with call number, title, author, and several bits of cataloging information about the book represented by the card. Patrons would look up a book in the catalog to find the call number so they could go to the book stacks to obtain the book. -
