In Chaghcharān, we decided to give up our jeep and continue by bus/truck. Trucks like this were quite common in Afghanistan. It is an International Harvester truck frame with a bed built and decorated in Afghanistan. Passengers could travel in the cab of the truck with the driver, crowded and hot, or in the top seats above the cab where we chose to sit. Up above you had lots of fresh air, and dust sometimes. In addition, the driver was always supposed to honk whenever we passed under the phone line so the passengers could duck.
The Blair Brainard Peace Corps in Afghanistan Photographic Collection captures the photographers experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan, primarily in the city of Herat, 1965-1968.- Creator

This is a picture of two Hazaras heading home after Jeshyn celebrations. One of the men had won a medal in Tent-pegging at the festival. Jeshyn was a week-long celebration in mid-August, throughout the entire country. It was a celebration of Afghan independence from the British, or at least when the British admitted they couldn't really dictate Afghanistan's foreign policy any longer.
The Blair Brainard Peace Corps in Afghanistan Photographic Collection captures the photographers experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan, primarily in the city of Herat, 1965-1968.- Creator

This is another encampment of nomads. they are not Pushto speakers but rather Persian speakers. I was told they are referred to as Chahar Aimaq or 4 Aimaq. the ones I am most familiar with did not migrate long distance like the Pushtu speakers in the earlier slides of this section. Rather they have settled homes where they live in the winter and early spring and plant some crops. During the dry summer and fall they travel the area finding grass for their animals.
The Blair Brainard Peace Corps in Afghanistan Photographic Collection captures the photographers experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan, primarily in the city of Herat, 1965-1968.- Creator

The jeep had a radiator leak and the driver often stopped at springs to load his water can. We had 6 people on the trip, the driver, Mohammad Omar our cook, and 4 Peace Corps volunteers. Usually 2-3 in front seats and the rest in the back. Pure luxury!
The Blair Brainard Peace Corps in Afghanistan Photographic Collection captures the photographers experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan, primarily in the city of Herat, 1965-1968.- Creator
