In this letter to Carl, John Preston McConnell appears to be giving advice against Carl accepting a job in New York because of the cold weather up there. He also expresses concern about instability in Mississippi where Carl also has job opportunities. 1932 was in the midst of the Great Depression and money was very hard to come by, even in state institutions and Dr. McConnell mentions hearing that some people were not being paid in Mississippi. Dr. McConnell also brings up the idea that Carl should start writing his memoirs and how that might be a thing to do while looking for work.
