Dairy Farming in Floyd County: A Day in the Life of a Dairy Farmer
In this project Annclaire Livoti interviewed dairy farmers Hubert and Anita Quesenberry in Willis, Virginia. The Quesenberrys owned a dairy farm from the 1950s to the 1970s and during the interview talked about selling their milk to a milkman who would take it to a pant for processing, and about making butter, cheese, and cottage cheese for their own personal use. They also talked about putting the milk in cool water while waiting for the milkman to come pick up their product, which is probably different than how things are done today. The Quesenberrys related a factual summary of the day-to-day life of a dairy farm. This interview is among projects created by students enrolled in English 446 (initially English 452), “Appalachian Folklore,” 1981-2019, and in graduate level counterparts English 548 and 648 “Appalachian Folk Culture(s)” offered 17 fall semesters between 1987 and 2009. Minimally contain collector’s introduction and analysis, transcribed informant interviews, and excerpted and labeled examples of oral, customary, and/or material folklore/folklife collected primarily within the Appalachian region. Most include also tables of contents, informant information, indexes (outlines) of interviews, photographs, miscellaneous paper items, and indexes of informants, genres, and geographic locations.
