No place else can charm the eye With such bright and varied tints; * * * * Angels often pausing there, Doubt if Eden were more fair, Beauty's home, Killarney, Ever fair Killarney. You have heard "Killarney" sung too many times not to recognize the above verses. Killarney is one of the poetic spots of Ireland. Ireland is a country of many natural beauties. It is blessed with an even climate. It has an abundant rainfall. For these reasons the grass and trees of Ireland are so green that the country is called the Emerald Isle. Its rivers, such as the Shannon, have had their beauties sung by the Irish poets. But the spot where Nature has done her best is in southwestern Ireland. Here are the Lakes of Killarney. It is one of these lakes you see in the view. It is a quiet stretch of water dotted with green islands, and bordered by rocky shores. The peaks of the MacGillicuddy mountains watch over the lakes. There are three of these lakes-the Upper, the Middle, and the Lower. Long Range River winds about for a couple of miles and connects them. The Killarney Lakes are of glacial origin. That is, they were caused by the ice sheet which swept Ireland as it did most other northern countries. This was ages ago. How were our Great Lakes formed? Ireland has had a famous history. Few countries its size can match it in the number of great men it has given the world. Statesmen, soldiers, and authors have been given us by the Emerald Isle. What is its capital?
