The Minaret of Jam stands 213 feet tall and is located in a narrow remote mountainous valley on the bank of the Herat River. it is the second highest minaret in the world. It was unknown by most of the workd until the late 1950's. Of course the local villagers in the area knew about it. The minaret was built during the Ghurid Dynasty (1148-1202). The purpose of the minaret is unclear. It is often assumed it marks the site of the Ghurid capitol of Firuzkoh but considering the size and remoteness of the valley where it is located, this seems unlikely<br>The Blair Brainard Peace Corps in Afghanistan Photographic Collection captures the photographers experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan, primarily in the city of Herat, 1965-1968.
