Letter from Carl to his parents, John Preston and Clara McConnell. This letter is apparently in response to an earlier letter from his parents dated January 35, 1930. In this letter, Carl alerts his parents he has been appointed a National Research Fellow for Foreign Study. He will have his choice of studying in either the Baltic, or in Jugoslavia. The remainder of the letter talks about the award and with Carl recommending one of his friends at University of Virginia for a position opening at Radford. This letter is also the first time we see something that will be very common in later letters- Round Robin writing. The McConnell family circulated letters amongst themselves so that all family members would know the same things about each other, and often would write letters of their own on the back pages of these letters. In this letter Clara Lucus (referred to as Machere here and in other places) added her own letter to other family members- Mac, Charlton and June.- Creator

This is the first letter in what will be a relatively long series- John Preston McConnell sent $10 in a letter to his son Carl, who was departing by ship for Europe. He sent two copies of the same letter, one to Carl's hotel, and one to the ship Carl would be sailing on. The letter addressed to the ship had the $10 in it, and did not reach its destination. Dr. McConnell later sent several inquiries to various places trying to track down the missing letter.- Creator

While onboard the ship Saturnia, en route to Europe, Carl and Rio McConnell wrote this letter to the McConnell family back home and described their journey thus far. As happened in other letters they wrote home, each took a turn writing, so the letter is actually from both of them. Rio mentions that they never received the $10 that John Preston McConnell sent and has mentioned in several letters he sent to them.- Creator
