In this letter mostly about family history, John Preston McConnell mentions to his son Carl a little about their relatives John Lucas, and Charles Kilgore who fought in the Great Battle of King's Mountain. He also again mentions the missing letter he sent to Carl with $10 in it and updates him on the search for the missing money. Included with this letter is a letter from the Postmaster of New York who informs Dr. McConnell that the letter in question was received on July 3, 1930 by Assistant Purser Cleves at the boat dock but that the letter can not be located. Letter from Carl to his parents, John Preston and Clara McConnell. This letter is apparently in response to an earlier letter from his parents dated January 35, 1930. In this letter, Carl alerts his parents he has been appointed a National Research Fellow for Foreign Study. He will have his choice of studying in either the Baltic, or in Jugoslavia. The remainder of the letter talks about the award and with Carl recommending one of his friends at University of Virginia for a position opening at Radford. This letter is also the first time we see something that will be very common in later letters- Round Robin writing. The McConnell family circulated letters amongst themselves so that all family members would know the same things about each other, and often would write letters of their own on the back pages of these letters. In this letter Clara Lucus (referred to as Machere here and in other places) added her own letter to other family members- Mac, Charlton and June.- Creator

In this letter to Carl and Rio, John Preston McConnell relates much news of the McConnell family. This news mostly involves a trip the McConnells took to Gate city to visit several members of the family. A point of interest is that he both reports that 10-20,000 squashes of various types are in his fields, but also reports that "The crops were exceedingly poor here and people are depressed financially, but they seem to be cheerful and satisfied." He mentions Carl and Rio's sixth wedding anniversary also, so we know this letter is in response to the one he received dated Sept 25, 1930 from Carl and Rio. JP was forwarding this letter to his son Paul and he includes a short letter to Paul where he briefly discusses rental properties they own together.- Creator

Carl shares a funny story about trying to explain to local police that though he was born in Milligan, TN, his permanent address is Radford, Virginia- a fact that confused the police officer greatly apparently.- Creator
