In this letter to Carl and Rio, John Preston McConnell gives housing advice to his son and daughter-in-law. Apparently Carl and Rio's financial situation was such that it made more financial sense to them to rent an apartment than to live in a house and Dr. McConnell is here advising them against that. "I think a man has a little better standing in the commnity if he has a home where he can entertain his friends and looked up on as one of the citizens than if he had mere apartments in a hotel or rooming house or apartmnte house of some kind." He urges Carl and Rio to take their time in making decisions.- Creator

This letter to the McConnell family in Radford from Rio in Oneota, New York seems to be updating them on her plans to return to Virginia in the coming months because she and her husband, Carl McConnell can not afford for her to stay with Carl for the summer. Carl McConnell was at the time teaching at a Hartwick College in Oneota, New York and had no guaranteed income for the summer. Rio mentions that they had run out of coal to burn and that they were both suffering from the climate in New York, also that they were in debt and that she felt the need to find a job to help with expenses. Rio McConnell was a certified teacher in the state of Virginia at the time. In previous letters she had mentioned the thought that she and Carl should rent an apartment instead of having a house to save on expenses and in his reply to that letter dated May 21, 1934, John Preston McConnell had urged them to rethink that and keep a house. This letter is a continuation of her thoughts on that matter.- Creator

In this letter to Carl and Rio, John Preston McConnell mentions that the State Teachers College at Radford had requested $15,000 from the state for a new heating plant, and $135,000 from the state for a new kitchen and dining room- this was during the Great Depression, so it was not a guarantee at all. In this letter he also gives some lifestyle advice in that he reminds Carl and Rio that they should live a good life each day and try to do good each day.- Creator

The McConnell family would circulate letters among themselves so that all members would know the same information. Sometimes they would write additional letters and pass these along as well, sometimes not. In the case of this letter, John Preston McConnell was sending Carl and Rio a copy of a letter he wrote to Paul. This accompanying letter does not have any new information except some advice to always be good to each other and to others. Dr. McConnell reflects that if he had his life to live over he would do more for others and would be more kind. In addition he asks for Carl to send a sketch and information to include in the next edition of his book "Who Am I?" and mentions Dr. M'Ledge Moffett is waiting on copies of her book about the history of Radford College from the press.- Creator

Apparently at the time he wrote this letter, John Preston McConnell was having some sort of health issues- probably related to an earlier letter mentioning him having shingles (a stress related skin disease). He reports that he went to the hospital for a check-up and that he was in good condition, but also that he had been advised to take a very long vacation. He mentions that Governor Trinkle had visited him in the hospital and urged him to take a 2-3 month vacation also. This letter was addressed to both Paul and Carl McConnell. In addition, to his health news, he mentions the college having purchased the "Heth Reservation" and how they are incorporating it into the college; he talks about the number of students at the college for their summer sessions and how that number is bigger than any of the other Teachers Colleges in the state; again mentions the Governor asking colleges to cut the pay rate for employees by thirty percent (the Great Depression was happening at the time) and- Creator
